In Memory

Randy Lewis

Randy Lewis, 77, a long-time resident of Newtown, Conn., passed away on March 11, 2022, at Regional Hospice of Connecticut. Randy leaves his wife of 52 years, Susan; his two daughters, Karen (David Pardoe) and Sarah (Robert McElhinney); grandsons, Jack and Sam; and his sister, Kate.

Born Charles Randall Lewis in East Lansing, Mich., on March 4, 1945, to the late Dr Charles and Anna Jean (Robertson) Lewis, Randy grew up in Oak Park, Ill., and graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School before attending the University of Virginia, where he cultivated his love of Civil War history and the Blue Ridge Mountains. After UVA he volunteered for the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.

For more than 40 years, Randy and his family enjoyed life in Newtown. His career in sales and estate planning included years at Northwestern Mutual, Cigna, and the Union Savings Bank Trust department as senior vice president. Randy contributed generously to his community through many organizations and served in various capacities, including MCCA (Midwestern Connecticut Council on Alcoholism) for 27 years, lately as chairman of the board. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, where he served on the vestry and several committees. He extended his love of UVA to the Fairfield County UVA Club, where he served as president and reestablished a memorial scholarship to encourage new students.

A voracious reader, Randy enjoyed talking about history, politics, and current events and never missed an opportunity to visit Mory’s in New Haven, the Tombs in Georgetown, or the George Washington Tavern in Washington Depot. More than anything, Randy loved spending time with his family. He cherished visits with his grandsons and daughters, and took many adventures with his wife, Sue. Together they loved to watch the wildlife in Captiva, smell the boxwood in Virginia, explore the National Seashore on Cape Cod, and simply enjoyed each other’s company on their many road trips.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 8, 2022, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Regional Hospice of Connecticut, regionalhospicect.org.

I knew Randy from our early age at First Presbyterian Church in Oak Park and casually thru high school. Always a good guy and a fellow Vietnam vet. Sorry to hear this news of his passing and wish his family and friends peace in a tough time.

I went to Oliver Wendell Holmes Grade School and Oak Park River Forest High School with Randy.  He was always very friendly and caring.  I remember that he broke his arm somehow on a door at his house as a kid.  The last time I saw Randy was at the 50th reunion and he was as nice as ever.  Deepest sympathy to his wife and family. I also remember Randy from the First Presbyterian Church.  He and my parents were both members of the Oak Park Country Club, and when my parents died, Randy's dad was the only person who had been a member longer than my father.  I remember a very nice chat with Randy at our last reunion.

My parents were long time friends of Randy's Mom & Dad. I first met Randy in Freshman football. The last time I saw him was at a holiday party at the Lewis home on Edgewood Pl. We spent most of that evening questioning Roger Lauritzen who had just returned from Viet Nam.

It would have been fun to have run into Randy on the Cape or Captiva though I doubt that we would have recognized each other.

My deepest sympathy to his family. Randy was a gentle soul, may he rest in peace.

Our 50th Reunion was a highlight for me, because RANDY LEWIS "came home." Once OPRF Chem Lab partners, I reached out to Randy after the Newtown Ct shootings thru our church's compassionate community network. We began email conversations. At the 50th we found much of our adult life's work, church, community & family were similar. My curriculum writing of Am History thru primary documentation grabbed Randy's interest as his passion was early Am History & Civil War History. His daughters and mine experienced similar academic and professional opportunities. Randy and Sue were starting to rehab/update their home's kitchen. At Russell's BBQ with Trinity & Fenwick, Randy was my lunch companion. Our conversations overflowed. Randy was my 50th Reunion! The Lord's Peace to Sue and family. Randy was much loved.

I am so sad to read of Randy's passing.  I enjoyed his company so much at our 50th and looked forward to seeing him again.  He really was a kind, attentive, and friendly person.  I join everyone else in wishing his family well and bidding a bittersweet farewell to a really good guy.
