Dan died just recently (January, 2013) while at his desk at work. He had heart problems for a number of years, and apparently his heart just stopped.
We were the closest of friends, like brothers really, and remained so throughout our lives. We met in Jack Kaiser's gym class junior year when I moved to Oak Park. We quickly became inseparable and had so much fun together. Jack took to calling us "the gold dust twins." We must have driven him crazy. Dan was a gentle soul, a fine musician, and an altogether wonderful person. He spent his professional life as a psychotherapist working for the county in Ithaca, NY, helping people who couldn't afford private care. Not a bad way to spend your life. We would discuss his work at times, and it was obvious that he cared deeply about his patients and their welfare. I am sure he was a great help to them. The world is a lesser place for his passing.
