Janet Elder Froberg Obituary

With deepest sorrow we announce that Janet Elder Froberg passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 78 on March 6, 2024, after a long and courageous battle against COPD.

Jan was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother (Nana). Though the last years

of her life became increasingly difficult, prior to that she was a wonder: a great wife, a loving mother, a doting Nana, an adventurous aunt, a dear friend to many, an excellent hostess and a great cook. Nothing pleased her more than the chaos of having a houseful of relatives and friends, especially on holidays.

Jan will always be remembered for her lovely smile, contagious laugh, and sense of humor which allowed her to make friends wherever she went. And go places she did, travelling extensively in the US as well as to many foreign countries. She will be missed by many.

Jan was born to Chet and Virginia Elder on September 18, 1945, and raised in Oak Park, Illinois. Always a bright student, Jan breezed through school with high marks. One of the few regrets of Jan's life was that she didn't attend college, instead opting for marriage. Though the marriage lasted only seven years, it yielded two of her most cherished gifts, Laura, her daughter in 1967, and Justin, her son in 1969. Jan then went to work, and with the help of her parents, tackled the role of a single parent as she did a magnificent job of child rearing. On September 5, 1981, Jan remarried the man who she sometimes referred to as the Love of her Life, and she and her husband John remained together until her passing. A further cherished gift joined her family at this time, Josh, a second son in 1984.

Prior to her illness, Jan loved not only walking all around Mt. Prospect where she and John lived, but also going on daylong hikes into River Forest to see her parents, or Buffalo Grove to see John's parents. She also hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and around Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park in Utah, to name some of her noteworthy hikes. A good athlete, Jan was usually the first female selected for games. She always maintained that she wasn't a competitive person, but anyone who played against her, whether it was volleyball, bocce, bridge, or any board game knew better. Though not as competitive at golf, Jan loved playing the game with her friends. She was also proud to be a member of Chapter JM of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Jan is survived by her husband John Froberg, and her three children, Laura Michel (John), Justin Beach, and Josh Froberg, as well as five grandchildren, Justin Beach, Jr, Anthony Beach, Joseph Beach, Benjamin Michel, and Gabrielle Michel. Jan is also survived by her sister, Kathy Hagstrom of Oklahoma City, and brother Edward Elder of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her older sister Ann Garrett, of Alger, Michigan.

A memorial service for Jan will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 E. Golf Road, Mt. Prospect, IL 60156. A luncheon at the church will follow the service for all who wish to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Jan's name, or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We were fortunate to see each other on two different occasions over the last recent years. You were my definition of friendship during high school. I will always remember my pal Jan. RIP

Fond memories of our early years and many giggles, I'm sure, at Wm. Beye.  Rest in Peace, dear Janet.

Prayers for your loving family.
